Melanie Reist

Employment Lawyer

Melanie has practiced employment law for more than twenty five years. Shortly after beginning her legal career she began working  for a well known Toronto management labour law firm. There she discovered an interest in employment.

In 1990 Melanie moved to Kitchener-Waterloo where she began to develop experience on both sides of labour issues.  Together with partner Charles Morrison, Melanie founded Morrison Reist in 1992.

Melanie has established herself as someone who provides exceptional service to both employees and employers.  She has an interest in the stories her clients tell and a passion for developing strategies to meet their goals. “I have found over the years,” Melanie says, “that by acting for both parties, I’ve been able to develop unique insight into the issues that are of concern to both employees and employers.” This affords her the opportunity to craft creative, efficient and effective solutions.

Melanie meets with clients during times of uncertainty and confusion; her role in these often challenging circumstances is primarily one of support, partnering with clients in order to find the way ahead.  Melanie is also an experienced and effective advocate  in court, and has appeared before a variety of administrative bodies including the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and Labour Board.

Melanie is a contributing editor to Waterloo Region’s Exchange Magazine  where she writes on employment law and workplace issues.  She is also a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars on employment law conducted by the Law Society of Upper Canada  and the Ontario Bar Association.

Melanie is frequently retained to conduct investigations dealing with bullying and psychological harassment, sexual harassment, human rights violations and employee misconduct.

With her strong employment law background, Melanie is also an effective mediator who can assist parties in resolving workplace conflicts as well as disputes which have gone to litigation.
